IV Cannula Sizes And Color
The IV
insertion as said above is one of the most important indispensable and hardest
skill that you could actually master. And though it is not that easy as it
actually seems to be the skills for this entire process can be improved with
regular practice. Given below are some of the major tips that will help you
deal with the insertion of IV Cannula at ease.
Determining what IV
Cannula Size should be used: There are various
cannula sizes made available that is again measured in gauge. The higher the
Gauge the smallest would be the size and the bore. The different types are Gauge 14 with orange
color, Gauge 16 of Gray color, Gauge 17 white colour, gauge 18 green colour, gauge 20 pink colour,
gauge 22 blue colour and the last but not the least gauge 24 yellow
colour.
Being confident: If this is the first time you are Inserting an IV
cannula, make sure that you do not act with uncertainty in front of the
patient. Even if you have not gained enough of experience yet continue to stay
calm showing the patient that you can. Being confident even when you are not
sure of how things are will give you a kind of positive note helping you gain
the trust of the patient at ease.
Checking out for the back flow: Once there is a blood flow in the flash back
chamber of the IV cannula, this means you have been successful in hitting the
vein. Now all that you need to do here is advance the needle further in order
to ensure that the iv catheter is in the vein before you actually go ahead and
retract it and advance the catheter all the way in.
Stabilizing the vein: Try and hold a movable unstable vein with your
finger and then try hitting the cannula into the vein.
Starting the process very slowly:
This is something
that has to be followed when the patient’s veins are fragile. The insertion of IV
cannula should be slow in the beginning in order to adjust the desired flow
rate. This will help the vein from blowing up because of the pressure given to
it.
Finding the right vein: Before you begin with the process do make sure
that you find the right vein for the insertion process by visualization and
palpating it.
Applying tourniquet: In order to make the vein more visible do make
sure that you apply tourniquet 3 -5 inches above the insertion site so that it
would impede the blood flow and dilate the vein for an easy process of
palpation and visualisation. Also make sure that it is not that tight not
loose.
