How Do You Set Up An Intravenous Infusion Using IV Infusion Set

IV Infusion Set

The Intravenous Infusion is generally considered to be the infusion of the fluid that is directly sent into the vein of the patient using the IV Infusion Set or the Cannula. There are various kinds of indications made available, for the administration of fluid say for example the replacement of electrolytes, the restoration of blood volume, and the last but not the least maintenance in the surgery staved patient.

The Intravenous Infusion therapy can also be used even for the administration of drugs say for example the chemotherapy, as it is believed to have an immediate action as the medicine is directly delivered into the vein of the patient. Through the given blog let's have a look at the principles of setting up an Intravenous IV Infusion Set.

The Fluid Bag Information: Before you have an Intravenous IV Infusion set being set, it is important that you have a look at the fluid bag. Although there are different kinds of fluids available, the bags still have a similar structure and labelling like the type of fluid, the expiry date of the fluid, port for injection, and the last but not the least port for giving a spike. It is important that you make sure the bag is with intact and the fluid is not cloudy, and no particular matter is present.

What Is the Right procedure: Have your self-introduced to the patient, and then check his chart followed by the prescription chart. Also make sure that you note down the type of fluids, volume, followed by the time to be given over. Don't forget to check for any allergy. Then try and explain the entire procedure to the patient in order to gain their confidence. Then have the filling chamber by squeezing it and allowing the roller ball clamp to allow the fluid run through the IV Infusion given set. Also check for any cloudiness or particular partner at present. Then have the outer package removed and have it hanged on the drip bag. Then have it set and close the flow using the clamp on the line. Decontaminate your hand and Don apron and the last but not the least the gloves. Ensure that there are no bubbles on the line. And the last but not the least Clamp off the roller ball.

How Do You calculate the drip: The drip rate here generally refers to the number of drops of fluids that enter the chamber every minute? The entire process is set manually determining the speed at which the fluid has been infused into the patient. This is how the entire process is calculated.

1L bag of normal saline to be given over 8 hours = 1000mls/8hrs = 125mls/hr
Then calculate the number of mls/min
E.g. 125mls/hr = 125mls/60mins = 2mls/min

For a standard giving set, 20 drops in 1ml

Finally, calculate the number of drops that is given per minute and as a result you get
